A. Williams Construction: About Us
(continued)...
Following this Williams decided to further its General contracting skills by biding on projects that involved
from the ground up construction. In 1997 Williams was awarded a subcontract from Forrest City Ratner which
helped to reshape the Downtown Brooklyn landscape. Williams successfully completed the entire construction
of PC Richards and Modells at Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues. Prior to this Williams was the main excavator
at the Atlantic Ave. Mall.
In 2004 Williams was awarded by DASNY, the contract to build the Student Services Center at Medgar Evers College
in Brooklyn. This was a DASNY set aside project and Williams exceed all of DASNY, CUNY and Medgar Evers College
requirements by employing over 60% minority and community based tradesmen and subcontracting over $5.5 million
worth of work to minority and women owned business.
This was an unprecedented achievement in NYC Construction History. Williams proved once, and for all to
see, that if minority contractors are given the opportunity they can and will compete effectively with their
majority counterparts. Williams leveled the playing field at Medgar Evers by giving opportunities to contractors
without bonding, encumbering their own bonding in order for contractors to get credit from suppliers and prove
the naysayers wrong.
At the end of the day Medgar Evers College opened its building for the September semester with a Certificate
of Occupancy from the NYC Building Department. This noble effort took a severe toll on Williams financially but
once again Williams used its experience and unrelenting hard work to move past this difficult time.
Thirty years in a long time and during this time Williams has had to work many fold harder than its majority
counterparts to succeed. Through it all Williams always accepted and embraced the assistance of others.
The SBA, the SCA, JP Morgan Chase, The NYC Parks Department, DASNY, Turner, Bovis, Tishman, Skanska, Morse
Diesal, TDX, FCRC, Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Army Core of Engineers, DEP, GSA and VA have
all been instrumental in the success of A. Williams. These organizations recognized the honesty and
willingness of Williams to take an opportunity and make it work on many levels.
Williams has never forgotten these organizations and the great people who only looked at Williams as a
hard working contractor not a minority contractor. Williams adopted this philosophy of fairness and has
contribute to numerous organizations both majority and minority over the years in order to foster the
growth and development of others. Personal gain is nothing if you can not give back to your community
and fellow man. We all bear a responsibility to each other and Williams has used this principle to make
sure it gets the job done. This is what has made Williams successful over the last 30 years.
The commitment and desire to move forward in the pursuit of the American dream has secured Williams'
place in NYC Construction. However, in order to survive over the last thirty years Williams has adapted
to an every changing environment. So even though Williams has helped to shape the landscape of the five
boroughs of NYC it continues to adapt to the needs and wants of the City. It is the only way that a
company of Williams humble beginning will be able to survive, grow, prosper and impact the people and
communities of NYC in the twenty first century.
